Reflexology for babies and children is a gentle and effective form of therapy to support, balance and heal the child both emotionally and physically and is suitable from the youngest of babies through into adolescence. This therapeutic, light touch works on the areas known as reflexes to help improve conditions of the body and can be done on either the hands or the feet. A healthy and balanced child is a happy child and reflexology can assist in easing some discomfort experienced during the early years such as colic, teething or poor sleeping habits.
With older children, reflexology will help to boost their immune system helping to keep the viruses and colds at bay and can also be beneficial for relieving stress and anxiety during exam times.
The parent or guardian will always be present during the treatment and assist in their child's comfort during the session. The baby may be more at ease sitting on your lap or by being supported by pillows, but whichever way, this may keep changing to ensure they are comfortable. Babies and children are often unpredictable, so the sessions will be flexible and are led by cues of the baby or child. At times it may be best to stop until the child shows he/she is ready to continue. Older children may prefer to lie or sit on the couch.
The treatment time will vary depending upon the age of the child. I would recommend up to 30 mins for 0 –4 years of age (with very small babies only having about 10 minutes). With 5-16 years old I would recommend between 30 - 45 minutes.
How reflexology is helpful for:
Parents may be shown a couple of simple techniques at the end of the session to use at home. This will help to speed up the healing process. This is also a great way to enhance the bond between the parent and baby.
