We have such busy lives trying to fit in all the demands of work and family and are inundated with additional pressures of replying to emails and messages, causing an increase in stress levels. With less leisure time, we tend to neglect our health and trade in on our well-being. It’s so important to make the time to give our body and mind the respect it deserves.

To understand the meaning of wellness, it’s important to understand its connection to health. The World Health Organisation defines health as being “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”
There are several elements of your lifestyle which need to be in balance to achieve overall wellness. Each one has an influence on your physical and mental health. These include:
Social connectedness - try to take 10 minutes out of your day to call or FaceTime a friend or family member.
Exercise - 20-30 minutes exercise a day can help lift your mood and relieve stress. Even if it’s just for a brisk walk. You can even split the time into two 15 minutes sessions if you don’t have the time.
Nutrition - choosing wholesome foods is a great start. Try to include as much variety as possible and aim to eat at least 5 portions of fruit/veg a day (more veg than fruit to avoid too much fructose). Avoid sugar and processed foods if you can. Aim to drink 2 litres of water a day.
Sleep - include quiet and calm activities before going to bed and stay away from devices after 8pm. Avoid caffeine after 12pm. Don’t go to bed too late and try to wake up at the same time each day.
Mindfullness - this is simply being aware of your thoughts and surroundings. Feel the wind in your hair, the rain on your face, the pavement below your feet. The more you become aware, you’ll notice how you respond to stressful situations. It’ll help you focus and also changes your brain and how it processes information.
Wellness is about practicing healthy habits on a daily basis to achieve better physical and mental health. By making simple and healthy choices on a daily basis, you will begin to have positive effects on you body and mind, your stress levels will reduce helping you to achieve optimal wellness.
